6 Ways to Protect Packages (That Aren't Insurance for Shipping Jewelry)

Having the right insurance for shipping jewelry is the ultimate peace of mind when you need to send a high-value package.

Insurance doesn't keep packages safe, though — the actions you take before shipping prevent losses from happening. If you're not in the habit of following these steps, it's time to change your routine.

Plan shipments ahead of time

Generally, the further out you can prepare a shipment, the better. This is partly because you can save time shipping jewelry in the long-run, too

Rushing your way through package preparation can lead to mistakes, which can lead to lost merchandise.

A few common perils include:

Clock
  • Forgetting to notify the recipient that you're sending them something. Losses can happen if the recipient isn't expecting a package and misplaces it because the label has been "disguised" to not include jewelry terms (which is discussed below).

  • Sending over weekends or holidays. While shipping centers operate on a nearly constant basis nowadays, it's still not worth the risk of having your package sit in a sorting facility longer than it needs to.

Disguise the label

A package destined to New York Diamond Co. with a return address of Miami Goldsmith Inc. is enticing for not only career criminals, but also opportune delivery personnel.

"MGI" sending to "NYDC" is much less conspicuous than the full business names.

These are two additional things you need to know about how labels impact package security:

Disguise
  • Use labels that adhere to the box or envelope. Adhesive sleeves are not recommended.

  • Print the label twice. You'll see why later on.

Choose your packaging wisely

A common myth is that you need to double-box your packages with adult-sized shoe boxes. While it's a secure way to ship, it's rarely necessary and will prove to be extremely costly.

Instead, adhere to the following principles that are secure and will also help you lower the cost of shipping jewelry:

Packaging
  • Select a small box or padded envelope as the inner package.

  • Choose a slightly larger box or padded envelope as the outer package.

A platform like JM™ Shipping Solution can help make your decision easier if you're having trouble choosing which options are suitable for your package.

Assemble with care

This is straightforward:

  • Affix the labels to both the inner and outer packages. This is why you printed two labels.

  • Place the smaller package inside the larger one.

  • Fill any empty space as needed.

Put on the final touches

Don't use just any tape to secure the outer package. Only use either of these options:

  • Paper mailing tape

  • Pressure-sensitive shipping tape
Roll of tape

Request an acceptance scan

The job of securely sending your package isn't complete until you:

  • Hand it to directly to your carrier

  • Have the carrier scan the it

  • Request that it's scanned again when delivered

Also remember to never use a drop box or leave your package unattended!
